JONNY PASVOLSKY Jonny was born Jonathan Marc Pasvolsky in Capetown, South Africa on July 26, 1972. Although he has been mistaken for many nationalities, he is of Spanish/Russian descent. In South Africa his family owned a bus company and during Apartheid they were the first buses to carry both blacks and whites. After the Soweto riots in 1976 his family applied for residency in Australia, immigrating in 1978.
As a first grade basketballer and rugby player he was on the field as much as he was on the stage during his high school career. As a teenager he landed lead roles in various musicals such as The Wiz, The Boyfriend, Guys n Dolls and Oliver. By this time it is estimated that he had watched Beverly Hills Cop more than 30 times.
It was his passion for film that led him to complete a four-year editing traineeship. During this time he was a runner on films meeting many prominent Australian actors who would later become his colleagues. This culminated in him working for ABC Australia as an editor. As a camera assistant he worked along side Geoff Burton ACS on The Sum Of Us starring Russel Crowe and John Polson.
It soon became clear that he was destined to act and swap the dark rooms of an editor’s suite for the bright lights. After a year of travelling Europe he spent six months snowboarding in Whistler Canada. On his return he was accepted to the Victorian College of the Arts, one of Australia’s premier drama schools.
Three years later he was back in Sydney as a working actor. Over the last six years he has worked in new theatre initiatives such as State Of Play creating new works with Nick Enright (Lorenzo’s Oil). He has worked with most of Sydney’s major theatre companies. Notably he played opposite Jacqueline McKenzie (4400) in David Auburn’s Pulitzer Prize winning play, Proof, produced by Sydney Theatre Company and directed by George Ogilvie (Mad Max III)
After a trip to Mexico in 2003 he ended up at the Academy Awards with his brother, writer and director, Steve, who was nominated for his short film Inja. Having experienced the most amazing shrimp EVER at the Kodak Theatre, pre-Oscars, he also got a taste of what is achievable by shooting for the stars.
Returning to Australia Jonny scored guest roles on many Australian series such as, Sea Change, All Saints, White Collar Blue and Young Lions. His international work includes Farscape and Fatal Contact: Bird Flu In America for ABC US. In 2004 he accepted a main cast role in McLeod’s Daughters for which he was nominated for a LOGIE award (Best New Talent). During this time he acquired skills such as horse riding, sheep shearing and whip cracking to name a few. As Australia’s highest rating drama series McLeod’s is shown in 122 countries worldwide (Hallmark USA).
Recently Jonny shaved his head to play Lennox in Geoffrey Wright’s (Romper Stomper) feature film Macbeth (Toronto Film Festival). He grew it back to play Mr Hooper in a new Australian movie Hey, Hey, It’s Esther Blueburger, starring Toni Collette.
Jonny is a passionate person with an openness that helps him soak in the world. When he is not pursuing his career he is pursuing life with an eclectic exuberance.
